Gemäß des Bundesverkehrswegeplans soll die bestehende Strecke 3600 zwischen Hanau und Gelnhausen von einer 2- bzw. 3-gleisig Strecke auf eine 4-gleisige Strecke erweitert werden. Aufgrund der VAST und BAST wird der Streckenausbau für eine Streckengeschwindigkeit von 230 km/h angestrebt. Um eine Streckengeschwindigkeit von 230 km/h zu erreichen muss die die Oberleitungsanlage (OLA) nach der Bauart Re250 hergestellt werden. Der erste Planfeststellungsabschnitt 5.17, der hier ausgeschrieben wird, ist der Bahnhof Gelnhausen (km 42,4 - km 45,9). Oberleitungstechnisch wird die OLA schrittweise vollständig neugebaut, auf die neuen Gleise erweitert und dabei auf Re250 hochgerüstet.
