Das kbo-Kinderzentrum München besteht aus einem Sozialpädiatrischen Zentrum und einer Fachklinik für Sozialpädiatrie und Entwicklungsrehabilitation. Aktuell werden in der Fachklinik 45 Betten betrieben. Der Bedarf (aufgenommen im Krankenhausbettenplan seit 11/2015) beträgt 60 Betten zuzüglich 15 tagesklinischen Plätzen. Der Patientenzuwachs im ambulanten Bereich von 12.000 auf 15.000 Fälle/Jahr erfordert zusätzliche Behandlungsplätze. Veränderte und zunehmend diversifizierte Therapie- und Diagnostikkonzepte stellen zusätzliche Anforderungen an die Räumlichkeiten. Der Zuwachs an Patienten, die inhaltlichen Neuausrichtungen und die daraus resultierenden räumlichen Anforderungen machen einen Erweiterungsbau des kbo-Kinderzentrum München und eine Neuordnung im Bestand zwingend und mit hoher Dringlichkeit erforderlich.
